A striking 19th century British glass carboy with a bulbous, onion-shaped body and short neck. The green glass has a rich appearance and displays a hand-painted and gilded armorial shield.
The armorial features the Pauncefote family arms, including three silver lions on a red ground. Below the shield is the family motto "PENSEZ FORT", meaning "Think Boldly" or "Think Firmly".
Large decorative glass vessels of this type were used in Georgian and Victorian pharmacy and chemist shop displays. Brightly coloured liquids and painted decoration helped attract attention from the street.
The extensive quartering on the shield reflects the family's long heraldic history and includes several additional armorial devices.
A rare and distinctive piece of Victorian glass with strong heraldic interest, suitable for collectors of antique glass, pharmacyalia and British social history.
