A late 19th-century Japanese fabric featuring a traditional wax-resist dyeing technique. The pattern was created by hand-painting wax onto the fabric before dipping it into indigo dye. The waxed areas resisted the dye, leaving the original fabric colour visible and revealing the intricate design.

This labour-intensive process creates a distinctive contrast between the deep indigo blue and the undyed pattern, giving the fabric its rich detail and character. A decorative textile with a traditional Japanese heritage, suitable for display or use in a textile collection.
