Wedding Basket, Late 19th Century Chinese Lacquered Three-Tier Basket

A late 19th century Chinese lacquered basket, often referred to as a wedding or gift basket.

The three-tiered basket has a bentwood carrying handle and fitted lid. It combines woven bamboo or rattan with wood, finished in black and red lacquer.

Gold-painted floral and botanical decoration runs across the black lacquered borders. The central sections feature woven red rattan panels, with pierced decoration to the upper tier.

Stacked baskets of this type were used in China to carry food, gifts and ceremonial items for weddings, festivals and family celebrations.
