Late 19th Century Chinoiserie Sewing Table

This late 19th century Chinoiserie sewing table dates from around 1880 to 1900. It reflects the popularity of Japanese and East Asian inspired furniture during the Victorian Aesthetic Movement.

The frame is made from natural bamboo with a scorched tortoiseshell finish, a technique widely used on decorative bamboo furniture of the period.

The painted panels use the Japanning technique to imitate traditional Asian lacquerware. They feature birds, flowering branches and landscape scenes in shades of black, gold, burnt orange and deep red.

The hinged lid opens to reveal a silk lined storage compartment with a button upholstered underside. A folding work surface sits below, decorated with matching Japanned artwork, providing a practical space for sewing or writing. An open bamboo shelf beneath offers additional storage for books, magazines or sewing accessories.

This is a well designed Victorian piece that combines decorative detail with everyday practicality. It works equally well as a sewing table, side cabinet or occasional table in both period and modern interiors.
