A fine hand-carved serpentine stone abstract bust by the Zimbabwean Shona artist Maynard Maenzanise, dating to around 1999. Based in Rusape, Zimbabwe, Maenzanise exhibited through Galerie Shona www.galerie-shona.org and was recognised for his expressive modern carvings. Following his death in 2006, his work has become increasingly sought after by collectors of contemporary African sculpture.
Carved from a single piece of dark serpentine stone, the sculpture has been polished to a smooth finish that enhances the natural colour variation and subtle veining of the stone. The composition takes the form of an abstract head and shoulders, with flowing organic lines and gently stylised facial features that create a quiet, contemplative presence while allowing the stone itself to define the overall form.
A superb example of the Shona sculpture movement, this striking work is designed to be appreciated from every angle.
