Chinoiserie Lacquered Wooden Storage Box with Hand-Painted Floral & Bird Decoration

This is a lacquered wooden storage box, likely dating from the late 19th or early 20th century, decorated with hand-painted Chinoiserie-style floral and bird motifs.

The box has a black lacquered ground with panels of orange and red blossoms, green foliage and birds, framed by fine red painted borders. A small metal escutcheon to the front indicates that the box originally had a lock and key.
