Victorian Silver-Plated Meat Cover (Cloche) – Gadroon Border, Etched Crest, 19th Century

This impressive Victorian silver-plated meat cover or Cloche dates to the 19th century and is a classic example of English tableware made for formal dining. Substantial in scale and weight, it was designed to keep a roast warm before serving, while also acting as a statement piece at the centre of the table.

The cover is richly detailed, with a gadroon or rope-style border running around the lower edge. The top is finished with a robust scroll-motif handle, both decorative and practical, and well balanced for lifting. 

An etched crest or monogram is visible to the side, adding a personal and historical note. The crest is possibly associated with the Cox family and bears the Latin motto In Labōre Quiēs. The surface shows an honest, attractive patina, with light wear that speaks to its age and long use rather than detracting from it. The plating remains bright, with minor surface scratches, a few shallow dings, and gentle tarnish in keeping with age.

A strong and decorative example of Victorian hollowware, well suited to a formal table or a sideboard display.
