Late 18th century antique painted blanket chest or coffer. Functional piece with a hinged lid, originally used for storing linens, blankets, and household valuables. Simple flat-sided design with a flat top makes it suitable as a coffee table with storage or for its original purpose as a trunk.
Interior features one open space and a small compartment called a "till" or "candle box" for smaller valuables such as candles, documents, or money. The candle box has two hidden drawers accessed by sliding the side up, providing an extra level of security.
Finished in dark red / maroon paint showing honest wear and patina from years of use. Includes an internal lock and secondary metal latch. The aged paint, metal hardware, and an old address label on the front, W. Farquharson, C/o Rendall, Comelybank Road, Stockbridge,(Edinburgh), add to its antique character.
