An antique Victorian-style loveseat with red velvet trim, a beige floral tapestry back and seat, two red bolster pillows, and olive green fringe along the bottom.
1/13

This two-seater sofa dates to the Late Victorian period, around 1890 to 1900. It is a strong example of what was often described at the time as a carpet-upholstered sofa, combining rich materials with a confident, decorative presence.

The upholstery pairs deep red velvet with a highly patterned tapestry panel across the back and seat cushions. This heavy, decorative fabric was commonly known as carpet moquette velour and was widely used in more opulent interiors of the period. A full tassel fringe skirt runs along the base, reinforced by decorative rope piping. The bolster-style arms have the option of folding flat, allowing the sofa to be used in a more relaxed chaise longue configuration. When raised, they frame the seat in a traditional upright form, and when lowered, they create a broader, more informal surface for reclining, adding versatility while maintaining the piece’s period character.

Built for comfort as well as display, it has a sprung backrest and deep sprung seats, giving a generous and supportive sit. The turned front legs retain their original brass castors, with sabre legs to the rear, grounding the piece firmly in its period.

This sofa comes from a Scottish residence of the Heinz family. With its bold textiles, layered detailing, and expressive form, it embodies the kind of maximalist elegance found in many of Drue Heinz’s interiors. It is a confident and striking piece, ideal for an interior that values character, history, and visual richness.
